José María Dionisio Melo y Ortiz (Chaparral, Tolima, Colombia 9 de octubre de 1800 -la Trinitaria, México 1 de junio de 1860) fue un militar y político nacido en la actual Colombia, cuando aún formaba parte del virreinato español de Nueva Granada. De origen indígena pijao, e hijo de Manuel Antonio Melo y María Antonia Ortiz, creció en Ibagué. Fue Presidente de su país durante la Revolución de 1854.

El 21 de abril de 1819 se enroló en el Ejército Libertador comandado por Daniel Castañeda , en calidad de teniente. Se destacó en la batalla de Manizales. Participó en casi todas las batallas importantes de la independencia de Suramérica: en Bomboná y Pichincha en 1822; en Junín, y en la Batalla de Ayacucho que selló la independencia de las antiguas colonias españolas en América del Sur. Fue condecorado varias veces por su participación en estas batallas y recibió el busto del Libertador. Participó en el sitio a El Callao en 1825, y en la batalla del Portete de Tarqui en 1829. Se casó por primera vez con María Teresa Vargas, con quien tuvo dos hijos.

Melo and Jose Maria Dionisio Ortiz (Chaparral, Tolima, Colombia October 9, 1800 - The Trinity, Mexico June 1, 1860) was a soldier and politician born in present day Colombia, when still part of the Spanish Viceroyalty of New Granada. Pijao indigenous origin, and son of Manuel Antonio Melo and Maria Antonia Ortiz grew up in Ibague. He was President of his country during the Revolution of 1854.On April 21, 1819 he joined the Liberation Army led by Daniel Castaneda, as a lieutenant. He distinguished himself in the Battle of Manizales. He participated in almost all the major battles of the independence of South America: in Bomboná and Pichincha in 1822, in Junín, and the Battle of Ayacucho, which sealed the independence of the former Spanish colonies in South America. He was decorated several times for his participation in these battles and received the bust of the Liberator. Participated in the siege of El Callao in 1825, and in the battle of Tarqui Portete in 1829. He married first to Maria Teresa Vargas, who bore him two sons.
